PROJECT BACKGROUND:

 

Molecules, Microbes and Meals is a book authored by Dr. Alan Kelly and published by Oxford University Press. This book focuses on the synergy between the art and science of cooking and how they co-exist. I was responsible for the art direction of this book, including photography, layout and the design of the book cover.

Book Cover Designs:

One of the biggest challenges of this project was the book cover design. It was important to convey the synergy between the molecular world of food science and intuitive world of cooking. To do so, the final design was a photo manipulation of a cocktail that has been spherified with a microscopic photographic of the sugar granules that are within the cocktail. Below is a gallery of the various book cover iterations I worked on.

I also was responsible for creating and shooting a selection of recipes that provided both culinary and visual context to the scientific literature within the book.
